Given how competitive online businesses are today, there’s a real need for marketers to push their sites above their rivals to truly stand out.
This is where SEO tools come in. And two of the leading SEO tools are SEO Powersuite and SEMrush.
Both of them have features that’ll help steer you in the right direction. But there are advantages and disadvantages to choosing one over the other.
To help you decide which tool to purchase, we have a comprehensive look at what they have to offer. Hopefully, by the end of this post, you can make an informed decision as to which is the better search engine tool for your business.
What Is SEO Powersuite?
SEO Powersuite is an SEO software you download and install to a local computer. As its name suggests, it’s a suite of products. You get access to four subproducts: Link Assistant, SEO Spyglass, Rank Tracker, and Website Auditor.
The hope is for users to use all four tools together to come up with a comprehensive SEO strategy to propel your domain forward.
If it helps, you can think of SEO Powersuite like Microsoft Office. It gives you access to multiple tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Each one performs a different task but all of them work toward the same goal of making office tasks more efficient.
What Is SEMrush?
SEMrush is a cloud-based, all-in-one SEO solution for businesses and online marketers.
The tool makes it easier to find all the relevant data you need to maximize your search engine performance. And the best part — you can access all of it from one dashboard.
Not only does this simplify monitoring your site, but it also allows you to keep an eye on your competition.
SEMrush is well-known for its on-page optimization features. However, it also has features that open the door for link building opportunities down the road.
SEO PowerSuite vs SEMrush: How Are They Similar?
SEMrush and SEO Powersuite share some similarities as far as functionality is concerned. And honestly, if the features listed in this section are all you need, you can’t go wrong with either one.
With that said, here are some features you can expect to have when you purchase either of these SEO tools.
|Site Audits||Website Editor looks at your site and looks for SEO opportunities||SEMrush performs a technical SEO audit of your site to find on=page issues|
|Rank Tracking||Rank Tracker keeps you up-to-date with how your keywords perform on search engines||Position Tracking monitors your performance in the SERPs and tells you if you moved higher or lower|
|Backlink Monitoring||Spyglass Tool shows you which sites link back to your domain||SEMrush has features to help you conduct backlink audits and analytics|
|Link Building||Link Assistant finds site owners you could work with and tracks your outreach progress||SEMrush prepares a list of backlink opportunities so you can set an outreach campaign|
Similarity #1: Site Audits
On-page optimization is one of the foundations of search engine optimization. So we’re happy to report that both SEMrush and SEO Powersuite are capable of assessing your site and finding probable chokepoints.
SEO Powersuite’s Website Auditor does a great job of letting you know if you have indexing and crawlability issues, page redirects, faulty URLs, missing tags, duplicate content, and similar issues.
Not to be outdone, SEMrush can also perform the same tasks.
SEMrush looks at your site and gives it a score. There is an option to see a breakdown of the report. This is so you can see what’s causing your domain to get high or low marks.
You can even see problems on a page level. Now you can review everything wrong with a specific post or article.
Similarity #2: Rank Tracking
How are your keywords doing in the SERPs? Are you ranking higher than the competition?
If you want the answers to these questions, you need a rank tracking feature to go with your SEO tool.
SEMrush has Position Tracking, a feature that monitors your keywords on a global, regional, or local level.
All you need to do is enter the keyword and let SEMrush do the rest. But not only can you track keywords for your site, but it also lets you track your competitor’s keywords.
As for SEO Powersuite, it has Rank Tracker. It’s a similar feature that allows you to enter as many keywords as you need to. You can schedule reports so you get updated information on where your site ranks in search engines.
Similarity #3: Backlink Monitoring
Having a list of backlinks is useful. It lets you determine if the inbound links you’re receiving is doing more harm than good.
After all, backlinks from sites in the gambling, drugs, pornography, or illegal firearms niche will only pull you down search engine rankings. You only want backlinks from trustworthy sources.
Backlink monitoring is also responsible for discovering who your site appeals to. It also lets you know if your marketing campaign works or not.
SEMrush and SEO Powersuite let you monitor your backlinks.
Similarity #4: Link Building
By having the power to go through your backlinks, you also unlock the ability to reach out to other sites to create link building opportunities.
For example, going through your competitor’s backlinks might reveal sites in a related niche that are open to guest blogging, interviews, resource sharing, and other link building practices.
You can use either SEMrush or SEO Powersuite to accomplish these goals.
How Are They Different?
Now let’s go over how SEO Powersuite and SEMrush are different from one another. What are some of the factors you need to take into consideration before purchasing either tool?
Difference #1: Price
Perhaps the biggest barrier to entry for any company would be price. We are not suggesting that you automatically go with the cheaper product. We aren’t suggesting that you buy the more expensive one either.
It’s all about value.
While some products cost more, if the features make up for it, then you could argue that you’re getting more value out of it than its cheaper counterpart.
With that said, SEMrush is significantly more expensive. Its base plan which it calls Pro is $99.95/month. The Guru plan is $199.95/month and the Business plan is $399.95/month.
On the other hand, SEO Powersuite’s Professional plan costs $299/year while the Enterprise plan is $699/year.
A three-month SEMrush Pro subscription costs almost the same as what you’d have to pay for a Powersuite Professional subscription for an entire year.
It may not be a consideration for you. But for businesses or marketers that are just starting out, this might influence their decision on which tool to buy.
SEO Powersuite also has a free version that we’ll discuss in a later section.
Difference #2: Local vs Cloud-Based Service
Another difference between SEMrush and SEO Powersuite is that the former is a cloud-based service while the latter has to be installed on a local computer.
Since SEMrush is cloud-based, you can have access to important data no matter which computer you use. If you’re using a desktop at home, you can run to the office and be confident that you can still access your SEO data using your work PC.
It’s also handy if you share your access with multiple users or regularly hop from one computer to another.
If convenience is important to you, SEMrush might be the better choice for your business.
However, if you’re the type who likes installing software and running it from one computer, SEO Powersuite has you covered.
Difference #3: Research Functionality
One of the drawbacks of SEMrush is that you can only research a set amount of keywords depending on the plan you subscribe to.
The SEMrush Pro plan lets you track up to 500 keywords. And you can only create up to 3 projects. Monthly page crawls are capped at 100,000.
For a small site, this could be enough.
But if you plan on using an SEO tool for a significantly bigger site, SEO Powersuite offers unlimited projects and keyword tracking.
If unlimited keywords, backlinks, and projects are important to you, Powersuite is the way to go.
What’s Better About SEO Powersuite?
Why should you consider Powersuite over SEMrush? Here’s a list of SEO Powersuite’s strengths.
You read right. You can download and install SEO Powersuite right now and use the tool for free. Even better, there’s no limit on how long you can use it. It’s free for however long you want it.
You don’t even have to provide your credit card information. But you do have to give your email address.
So what’s the catch?
Think of the free tool as a sampler. You get to see how the tool works and explore your options. But the data provided is limited.
But even if some of the paid features are not available, SEO Powersuite’s free version is still quite comprehensive. You can still see up to 1,100 backlinks and crawl up to 500 pages.
Pretty impressive if you ask me.
Internal Link Visualization
If you’re anything like me and you need visualization tools to understand data, you’d be happy to know that Powersuite has this feature.
Powersuite represents internal links as dots. The bigger the dot, the more internal links it received.
Of course, you also get to see the relationship between pages. This lets you know immediately which landing pages you managed to neglect.
I have to mention it again. Both the Professional and Enterprise plans have unlimited data. That means you can research unlimited websites, keywords, and backlinks.
You can also perform unlimited page crawls — which is ideal for freelance marketers or those who run an agency.
What’s Better About SEMrush?
So what about SEMrush? What makes it one of the leading SEO tools in the market?
SEMrush values its customers. That’s why it’s so easy for its users to get in touch with SEMrush customer representatives in the event that they have questions or concerns.
That’s not to say that SEO Powersuite doesn’t have support. But they are only accessible through email, Facebook, or Instagram. You can also submit a ticket from the dashboard.
This pales in comparison to SEMrush that have toll-free phone numbers you can call (for US, Europe, and Australia). There’s also a live chat feature on its website. Then there’s email and social media accounts.
And you might not even need to contact them if you have questions. SEMrush has an active community so you’re bound to find answers just by Googling it.
It’s unfair to compare some of SEMrush’s features to SEO Powersuite since the former positions itself as an all-in-one SEO solution. Meaning there are features designed to optimize your site from the backend down to your social media performance.
But it has to be mentioned—at least in passing—since it’s one of the reasons why most marketers love the tool.
When all the features work together, it does make life that much easier.
One could argue that SEMrush has strong features for competitor research. Again, this is not to say that it’s not possible to do that using Powersuite because it is.
But one look at SEMrush’s Traffic Analytics features and you’d fall in love with it.
It contains all the information you need to understand how your competitors stand up to you.
Who Should Get SEO Powersuite?
Given its features and strengths, Powersuite would appeal to agencies and freelancers who work with multiple clients at a time. Because you have to install the software on a computer (and therefore, you can’t easily share the tool with everyone you work with), solopreneurs might get a kick out of it as well.
Not only does it provide unlimited data, but you can start unlimited projects with it.
Its affordable price makes it a great starter SEO tool for those who’d like to explore online marketing.
Who Should Get SEMrush?
SEMrush is the better choice for medium- to large-sized businesses that can afford its monthly plans. It’s a great investment considering its features take site expansion into account. If you plan on scaling your online business, SEMrush can go there with you.
