Moz Vs Yoast: Can These SEO Tools Work Better Together?

Moz and Yoast are two totally different platforms for search engine optimization. One is a stand-alone, cloud-based software solution while the other is a WordPress plugin that’s designed to optimize your domain.

But while their implementation is different, their goal is the same — give your site the best chances of outranking your competitors.

So that begs the question: Can Moz and Yoast co-exist and optimize your domain without clashing with one another?

Let’s jump right into it and find out.

What Is Moz?

Moz is a SaaS company that specializes in SEO. Its flagship product, Moz Pro, is responsible for the bulk of its features.

But what kind of features are we talking about here?

You can break down Moz Pro into six features.

Keyword Research

Keyword research is so important in SEO. Without it, you won’t have any clue which terms you need to target to rank in Google.

Fortunately, Moz Pro comes with this feature.

Once you enter your seed term, Moz will provide a number of suggestions you could use to optimize your content for search engines.

And as you dive deeper into the entries, you’ll find metrics that can help determine the quality of Moz’s suggestions. You get to see their monthly volume, keyword difficulty, organic CTR, priority, among others.

The Organic CTR metric, in particular, is worth focusing on. Why? Because it measures how many clicks pages get based on your target keyword. That way, you’d know which keywords are worth optimizing for.

This feature can also track your competitor’s target keywords. Just enter the domain of your rivals’ domains and Moz will compare your domain with theirs. Now you’ll get to see which one of you dominates the SERPs or specific words or phrases.

Rank Tracking

Where do your pages show up in the SERPs? Are you ranking higher or lower than your competitors?

We’ve just discussed how Moz can track your keywords and where your pages stand in the SERPs. This is possible through another Moz Pro feature, Rank Tracking.

Through this feature, you’ll have an easier time assessing whether you need to make changes to your current SEO strategy or stay the course.

You can even compare mobile search results against desktop users.

Site Crawl

Having the ability to perform a site audit is important. It lets you know what SEO factors affect your chances of ranking higher on search engines.

You can use Site Crawl to find and correct on-page issues quickly.

Not only will Moz flag errors like missing metadata and redirect issues, but it will also give you an idea of how you could fix these yourself.

And Moz Pro will continue to send alerts on a regular basis so that you’d always be on top of things.

On-Page Optimization

While Site Crawls goes through each page to find technical errors throughout your domain, On-Page Optimization helps with optimizing the page content itself.

Each page gets an overall score which lets you know how optimized it is at the moment. As you scroll down the results, you’ll find a list of recommendations on how you could boost your score.

All the fixes you need to make are there. Moz even categorizes these errors based on which fixes are critical and which ones you could address at a later time.

The Content Suggestions tab presents some suggestions on which topics you should include on your post based on pages that rank for the target keyword.

Spending time on developing quality content would not benefit you if you don’t get backlinks from reputable domains.

Fortunately, Moz Pro comes with a Link Research feature to help with that.

Now you can see all the sites that link back to your domain. Not only that, but you can also see the link profile of each one. That means you can see for yourself if the links are superior quality or if they should become candidates for disavowment.

You’ll see the Domain Authority and Page Authority of each. Using these metrics will ensure that you can make informed decisions on what to do with every backlink.

But what if you’re looking for brand new link opportunities? Possibly from sources that link back to your competitor? Can you do that?

Simply enter the domain of your competitor and you’ll see which sites link back to them.

The feature also has the ability to track your link building efforts. Here, you can add sources that you’d want to work with down the line. That way, you won’t have to add every candidate on a separate list.

Whether it be for your team or for clients, you’ll need a way to create and send reports. Moz makes the process of creating a custom report super easy.

It comes with pre-built templates you could use. Moz will compile all your data and add it to your report. Now all you have to do is export the report as a PDF or CSV file.

You can ask Moz to create a report automatically and deliver it whenever you need it. These reports can come daily, weekly, or monthly.

This is especially useful for SEO agencies who report to multiple clients.

Moz Pro has four main pricing plans. There’s Standard ($99/month), Medium ($149/month), Large ($249/month), and Premium ($599/month).

A fifth option, Enterprise, is available for those with specialized needs that aren’t covered by the four plans above.

What Is Yoast?

Unlike Moz Pro, Yoast is an SEO plugin for WordPress. That means in order to use it, you need to set WordPress as your content management system (CMS).

And the thing about Yoast is that it really doesn’t set out to compete against other SEO tools. For one thing, Yoast is free. Anyone can install the plugin although Yoast does offer other related products such as additional plugins and training courses.

For the remainder of this post, we’ll focus on the free version of Yoast.

Yoast Features

So what are the features that make Yoast a solid plugin?

  • Keyword Optimization — When you enter a keyword, Yoast will make sure you use that term as you write your content.
  • Schema Integration — This will make sure that search engines know what your pages are all about. This will lead to faster indexing.
  • Content Updates — Yoast will let you know if your high-value pages have not been updated in six months. On the free version, there is a warning but you’d have to inspect pages manually.
  • Page Preview — Get to see what your page looks like on Google’s SERPs once it’s published.
  • Readability Score — Know if your page is easy on the eyes using the Flesch Reading Ease Score.
  • Breadcrumbs — You can use breadcrumbs to help search engines crawl your site faster.
  • No-Follow — Specify which links are no-follow. There’s even an option to mark sponsored links.
  • Technical Tools — Yoast gives you access to robots.txt, .htaccess files, permalinks, and sitemaps. These tools are not easy to configure if you’re not a webmaster. But Yoast makes these accessible for most to use.

Do You Need Yoast?

In most cases, yes. It’s a safeguard against issues that could leave your whole domain unoptimized for Google.

And there are even instances when you’d need Yoast to apply the recommendations set by Moz Pro or other SEO tools.

Most WordPress users have an SEO plugin of some sort installed on their sites. And they also make use of SEO tools on the side.

Using both simultaneously will not affect your site as far as functionality goes.

Moz vs Yoast: How Are They Similar?

Both tools benefit your SEO campaign. That’s it in a nutshell.

You can’t compare these tools directly because they have different scopes and limitations. Rather than decide which of the two to pay for, you should instead consider using both.

They would work really well together.

Here’s one way of looking at it: Yoast is all about prevention while Moz Pro is the cure.

You use Yoast to prevent SEO issues before you launch a site or publish a new post. It alerts you what mistakes to look out for as you work on your content. You can make changes to your linking structure, breadcrumbs, and sitemaps before your domain goes live (or after the fact).

But if you’ve never checked your domain for ongoing issues or haven’t done so in a long time, then you’ll need Moz Pro to crawl your pages and look for problems you may not be aware of.

How Are Yoast and Moz Pro Different?

They’re very different.

As mentioned, Yoast is meant to help you prevent issues. Moz is there to let you know if there are issues you may have missed post-publication.

That’s why they don’t really share similar features.

Moz Pro will help you develop an SEO campaign. Yoast, on the other hand, can help with the implementation of it.

How Can You Use Yoast SEO and Moz Pro Together?

Let’s use an example to demonstrate the effectiveness of using Toast and Moz at the same time.

Say you want to publish a post and have it rank for a certain niche.

First, you’d want to log onto your Moz Pro account and use its keyword feature to find relevant terms that have high monthly volume and low keyword difficulty.

Once you have a keyword that you’d like to target, proceed to WordPress to draft a post. Make sure you enter your keyword where specified. Yoast SEO will let you know if you missed inserting your keyword or haven’t use the target term enough.

Yoast will encourage you to add the keyword in your post, meta title, meta descriptions, and wherever else it sees fit.

You can’t do keyword research on Yoast so you’d have to use Moz. And you can’t make direct changes on your site through Moz so you’ll need help from Yoast.

This symbiotic relationship can only help your domain grow on search engines.

Who Should Get Moz Pro?

Moz Pro is for anyone who’d like to develop an online marketing plan. It provides valuable data like keyword information and backlink analysis. It’s for marketers who need to explain to their clients or bosses what’s wrong with their SEO.

Who Should Get Yoast?

Yoast SEO if for those who need a way to manage their pages from within WordPress. Needless to say, if you’re an online marketer who doesn’t have direct access to the CMS, then you probably don’t need Yoast.

But if you’re using an SEO tool and need to implement some of the suggestions presented to you, having Yoast is not a bad idea.

We highly suggest using Moz and Yoast together to improve your domain’s SEO health.
