Moz and Ahrefs both have features and credibility that makes them deserving of their popularity. But if you only have to choose one tool—which is the case for most SEO professionals—do you go with Moz Pro or Ahrefs?
Answering that won’t be easy. But we’ll do our best to break down each tool so you can figure out which tool would work best with your SEO strategy.
Today, you’ll see what these tools have to offer, in what ways they are similar, how they are different from each other, and who they are for.
By the end of this post, you should have a clear idea of whether you should pick Moz Pro or Ahrefs as your all-around SEO tool.
With all of that said, why don’t we go ahead and discuss what each tool can do for you?
What Is Moz Pro?
Moz is a company that offers products built specifically for online marketing with Moz Pro being its main offering.
Moz Pro is an all-in-one SEO tool. Meaning users can gather valuable data that they can use to develop all sorts of SEO strategies like link building to rank monitoring.
This has its upsides and downsides. Using one tool to cover all aspects of SEO means you don’t have to sign up for services that only covers one aspect of SEO. But it also means you have to pay for features that you might not need.
So what are some of Moz Pro’s features?
What does Moz Pro mean by Campaigns? It’s basically a way for you to set up a domain to track. And it’s one of the first things you have to do after you sign up for an account.
This process requires you to connect a Google Analytics account so you can’t enter just any domain for tracking.
Campaigns will also require you to add a keyword or keywords to target. If you don’t know which ones to add at this point, Moz Pro has other features that can help which we’ll discuss later on.
Campaigns will provide metrics that can help you make sense of your online presence. Search Visibility, for example, determines how visible your site is on the search engine result pages or SERPs based on the keywords you submitted.
The other metric you want to pay attention to is Domain Authority (DA). It’s one of Moz’s strengths in the SEO space since this is a proprietary score that they developed. A lot of marketers rely on DA to assess the quality of a site. Your DA score goes higher whenever you improve your on-site optimization and online reputation.
Rankings show you how optimized your pages are for the keyword you entered. In simpler terms, you’ll see where a page ranks in the SERPs for a given keyword.
If you enter a competitor, you can compare your page rankings with theirs with the goal of outranking their entries through page optimization.
Rankings even show you which keywords you currently rank for but haven’t started tracking just yet.
We’ve already talked about how Moz Pro checks your whole domain to see if it is optimized or not. But what about individual pages?
This is where the Page Optimization feature shines.
When you enter a specific page URL, Moz will provide a page score. A high score means your page is closer to being fully optimized for search engines.
Moz uses certain factors to assess the quality of a page. To help you understand how it came up with the page score, it breaks down issues into categories: Hurting Your Score, Helping Your Score, All Factors, and Content Suggestions.
Hurting You Score and Helping Your Score seem self-explanatory. It shows which issues pull your page down the search ranking while Helping Your Score are factors that do the opposite. All Factors simply combines the two.
Content Suggestions gives you a list of keywords to add to your post based on what keywords other top-ranking articles include in theirs.
Site Crawl takes care of other on-page issues that search engines and visitors encounter might encounter when they land on your pages.
This includes improper use of metadata information, overly long page titles, missing page descriptions, and more.
It can also check for duplicate content and low-quality posts on your site.
The better your backlinks are, the higher your Domain Authority and Page Authority (PA) will be. That’s why you’d want to get rid of spammy links pointing to your domain.
Moz Pro’s link building features can help you tell bad backlinks from the good ones. It also presents you with a list of your best pages based on the quality of backlinks it receives.
Other metrics included in the reports are no-follow vs do-follow information, PA, DA, spam score, anchor texts used, and the linking domain’s DA score.
You can also see how many backlinks you’ve gained and lost over time.
If you entered competitors, you can check their link profile and compare it to yours.
Other link building features include:
- Link Intersect — Find links that point to your competitors but not to yours. This is useful for link building strategies such as guest posting.
- Link Tracking — Use this feature to save backlinks you find through Link Intersect. It will create a to-do list so you can easily monitor them.
- Link Research — Research the link profile of any domain. This is a good tool to have if you need to understand your competitor’s backlink strategy.
Keyword Research is probably Moz’s biggest feature. You can use it to find keywords through a seed term which is basically any term that’s related to your niche. From there, Moz will find related keywords you should target.
You can also enter your competitors and Moz will recommend keywords based on their keyword usage.
You can use either method to create a keyword strategy from scratch.
After you enter a keyword, you’re given key metrics such as its monthly volume, keyword difficulty, and organic click-through rate (CTR).
The Organic CTR metric is especially useful since it shows how often users click pages that rank for the term you provided. You need to understand that just because a page ranks for a term does not mean users click on it. For example, a user might click on ads or one of the results that show up on Google’s local business listings instead.
Note: Moz Pro has other features that cater to competitor research but works the same way as the features we just discussed. These include the Fresh Web Explorer, On-Page Grader, and On-Demand Crawl. So we will no longer talk about them in detail.
That about does it for Moz Pro.
Now let’s dive into what Ahrefs has to offer its users.
What Is Ahrefs?
Ahrefs is considered as one of the best—if not THE best—SEO tools in the market today. And there are plenty of reasons why people think that it is the case.
Your subscription comes with access to its many features that produce amazing data. Its filter options help you find the exact information you’re looking for.
It has a robust online community where you can throw any concern or question you may have about the product or how to use it effectively. There’s even a YouTube channel dedicated to walking new users through the tool.
So what can Ahrefs do for you?
Ahrefs’ Site Explorer lets you enter any domain so you can grasp their performance on search engines. You gain access to information like their estimated traffic, target keywords, and more.
After you conduct your search, you’ll find details like the Ahrefs Rank. The closer that number is to 1, the higher the quality of the site based on its link profile.
Then there’s Domain Rating (DR) which indicated how authoritative that domain is. It’s similar to Moz Pro’s Domain Authority metric.
URL Rating (UR) tells you the quality of the links pointing to the domain or page you entered.
Then there are the other useful metrics you’ll need access to like the total number of backlinks it has, how many domains point to the URL you entered, the number of organic keywords, and more.
It a great breakdown of information — and you can see it all in one place.
Ahrefs claims to have a database of 163 million links and 296 billion pages. So if you want to check your domain’s backlinks, Ahrefs is one of the best software to use.
Again, you could see metrics like DR, UR, Referring Domains, and more to get you to understand the quality of the backlinks you receive.
Even better, the filter options let you break down the results to hide unnecessary information. This gives you the best chance of finding the best backlinks to pursue or disavow.
You can even filter by link type, platform, language, and page traffic. If there are words you phrases you want to include or exclude, you can do so.
If you use Backlink Profile on either your site or your competitor’s, you’re bound to walk away with all the data you’ll need to build a solid link building strategy.
And just like Moz Pro, you can view new and lost backlinks. But Ahrefs has another feature that identifies broken links. Why is this important? Because you can use the broken link building tactic that so many marketers use to regain lost backlinks.
Here are other link-related features that are available on Ahrefs:
- Internal Backlinks — Identify errors in your internal linking strategy. Find pages that are worth linking to within your site.
- Link Intersect — Compare backlinks with your competitor and find domains that could link back to you.
Organic Search lets you assess your domain’s performance on search engines. When you enter a domain, Ahrefs will show you what keywords your domain ranks for on Google.
Immediately, you’ll find information like which keywords your domain shows up as a result in, the volume, keyword difficulty, CPC, traffic, and its SERP position.
This could lead to the discovery of keywords you didn’t even know you managed to rank for.
And if you entered a competitor’s domain, you’d see the same type of information that you could leverage into ranking higher than them in search results.
If Ahrefs finds new keywords that your pages rank for, it will automatically mark them as new and save them in a separate section. Another section called Movements will monitor changes in keyword rankings.
Here are other features you’ll find under Organic Search:

- Content Gap — Find keywords that your competition ranks for. Works in a similar way as Link Intersect.
If Top Pages shows pages that rank for the most keywords, the Pages feature shows you pages with the most backlinks.
By toggling the filter options, you can break down the results even further. For example, you can only show internal links. Or you can only show pages that had the biggest growth over 30 days.
The Top Content feature will tell you which pages had the best performance across social media platforms.
For those who are into keyword research, you’ll find the Keyword Explorer tool to be one of the best in the industry.
Not only can you set what country you want the results for, but you also get to select what search engine you want Ahrefs to draw data from.
You’ll receive quite a lot of data after the search pulls through. You have keyword difficulties, search volume, clicks, and CPC among others.
You’ll also receive keyword ideas based on the term you entered.
And not only do you get words or phrases, you even get full questions that you could use to come up with fresh content for your site.
Use this feature to look for popular content surrounding a topic or niche. Those who are familiar with Buzzsumo know what to expect.
Ahrefs gathers relevant pages based on organic traffic, referring domains, domain rating, traffic value, and shares on social media.
If you’re planning on expanding your content, this is one feature you can’t work without.
Aside from the features already discussed above, Ahrefs also has the following:

Moz Pro has four plans: Standard ($99/month), Medium ($149/month), Large ($249/month), and Premium ($599/month).
As for Ahrefs, it also has four plans: Lite ($99/month), Standard ($179/month), Advanced ($399/month), and Agency ($999/month).
Only Moz offers a free trial which lasts 30 days. You can try Ahrefs for a week but it’ll cost you $7 to do so.
Additional User Cost
Both tools are dead even when it comes to how many users have access per account. It’s either one, three, or five depending on the plan you selected.
However, adding more users to Ahrefs is cheaper than it is on Moz Pro.
You can add one user for $49/month on Moz Pro. But on Ahrefs, adding one more user only costs $30.
If you’re only using Moz Pro or Ahrefs to monitor one site, then this shouldn’t be an issue. But for agencies or freelance SEOs, then the number of projects you can create will be a factor.
On Moz Pro, you start with three campaigns. That number increases to 10, 25, and 50 as you go up a plan.
But on Ahrefs, you start with five projects. Higher plans will up the limit to 10, 25, or 100 depending on what you choose.

- Data Cap — Ahref plans offer higher caps on the number of keywords and backlinks you can research and track.
- Features — Ahrefs’ features appear to be fully fleshed out compared to Moz Pro. It’s also more suited for those who plan on launching more content on their site.
Who Should Get Moz Pro?
Moz Pro can do pretty much the same things as Ahrefs. Though admittedly, Ahrefs does a better job of presenting them.
Because the base plan for both tools cost the same, getting Ahrefs would make more sense. But if you handle more than ten domains, Moz Pro would end up costing less.
It’s also better for those who are just starting with their SEO campaigns.
Who Should Get Ahrefs?
Those who are serious about their digital marketing strategy and are in it for the long haul should get Ahrefs. If you know what data you’re looking for and know what to do once you get them will find that this tool is more than enough to get you rolling.
